D. AIDS ----- discovered in l981
***history goes back to the l940's in
Africa. It seemed to spread into
Italy and then to Europe
*** came to USA from Haiti / first
spread into Miami, New York City
and Los Angels locations
E. AIDS ----25 million people have
died, 500,000 in USA
F. Today, there are around 40 million people who have HIV/ and maybe the actually AIDS
*** about 7000 new people / day are
said to develop HIV

G. What HIV/ AIDS ----- is NOT
1. can not be spread by air
2. can't be spread by casual contact
3. can t be spread by sweat, tears,
or saliva
D. How HIV/AIDS is spread :
1. by sexual contacts
2. by infected blood, semen and
vaginal fluids
3. can be given from mother to child
from pregnancy or nursing
4. can be spread sexually into mouth, eyes, nose, rectum----
and vaginal and penis openings
5. Needles:
If infected with virus-----------
could be from tattoos, all forms of
body piercings, and blood transfusions, and drug use
6. Pregnancy---- now WE tests Moms for STD's when pregnant
7. Giving and receiving blood----

**key is to use clean/ sterile needle

How does HIV/ AIDS attack body ?
1. The virus will destroy WBC's
2. As your WBC count lowers, the immune system is weakened to fight off any form of germs
*** in a way, an AIDS victim is in more danger from YOU and your germs than you are in danger of them !!!!!!

Stages or variety of HIV virus :
1. Early stage = last about 10 years, usually just in body nodes and has no outward signs
2. Middle stage = 40-70 % of people will then develop middle stage
*** will have fever, headache, sore throat, rash, diarrhea, loss of weight
3. Later stage = very low WBC count, flu-like, body aches, swollen glands, lack of appetite, rashes, very thin
4. AIDS stage = severe low WBC count, common to end in death
